Haus of Gloi ~ Vice

Hello and happy Monday! I'm definitely happy this Monday because it's Presidents Day and I'm off work. Weehee! So I will be enjoying this extra day off, as tomorrow morning I have a meeting and other responsibilities to tend to.

Today, I will be going out of my comfort zone with a free imp I received with my Haus of Gloi Valentine order- Vice! Vice is a fragrance I wouldn't choose for myself, but I think every perfume deserves a chance!

Let's explore the scent description together! :D

Steam billows rolling off a vessel of fresh made Turkish coffee, marshmallow goo tainted by graham cracker crumbs, toasted hazelnuts and blanketed in black chocolate.

Vice by Haus of Gloi

Vice is a perfume from Haus of Gloi's general catalogue, so I have happened upon the scent description before. The reason I have not given this little guy a chance yet is because I'm usually not into foody scents, I don't think I'm into coffee scents (as I'd rather smell like tea, but I've never explored the realm of coffee fragrance until right now), and I'm not a big fan of chocolately scents. Therefore, Vice is a combination of things I tend to avoid in a fragrance. Sorry, Vice!

Preparing myself for the worst!

When I opened the imp, I smelled coffee and marshmallows!

Initial application is interesting and perplexing. Where are the foody notes I so dread? This smells nothing like the description. In fact, I'm actually rather liking what I smell! Maybe the notes melted together and made a super fragrance that's not foody, but just balanced and sexy! I almost smell something that's not in the scent description, like maybe a floral note? I can't put my finger on it!

The drydown reveals the coffee once again. I think I can smell the dark chocolate and a bit of the graham cracker notes as well. Okay, this is more like the description. I definitely don't dislike it as I thought I might. I still can't quite put my finger on this perfume. I don't know if I like it or I don't like it. Is that weird?

Once the perfume is dry and settled on my skin, it's a lot more subtle and the mystery note comes back for me. What am I smelling?! I do detect hints of the scents in the description, but it's still not what I particularly expected.

So, have I been converted? Not really. I think Vice is a nice scent that I had fun trying out. I bet it's absolutely perfect in a pumpkin butter, which I'd be willing to purchase. However, Vice will not make its way into my full size collection. I can absolutely see it working for people that are more into this kind of perfume, but it's still not really my thing. I give Vice a lot of credit though, as it's so much better than I expected it to be (not that I thought it would be bad- just that I didn't think it would be a scent I'd enjoy).

I hope you all have an amazing week! I am waiting on a couple orders I made, and I can't wait to review them for you wonderful ladies!

  1. Sometimes a scent can be ever so lovely but just not your thing... I don´t think this would be my thing either...

    1. Absolutely! I wanted to prove myself wrong
with this scent. Sadly, it is quite pretty, but still not me.

    2. Yeah, I try things out of my comfort zone once in a while, sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn´t... I´d love to send you some samples, some that may be out of your comfort zone, but that really made an impact on me, and some that are more your thing. Think of it as a care package! My mail is taralome[at]hotmail[dot]com, we can swap adresses and just see what happens! :D

    3. Awe, I would be honored! I am really weird about taking without giving back in return, so I would definitely also send you a care package :) Like I said, I do need to rebuild my sample arsenal, but I'd be happy to give you a list of my samples as of now to see if anything strikes your fancy! Thanks for your email address, I will write you an email with mine so that you have it too!

    4. Yeah, I´m like that too! It did bother me a bit when Su said she didn´t want anything in return for her awesome care package. So, I´m trying to give back by giving to others I guess... I just sent you an email!

  2. I've only tried it as a scrub, and thought it was awesomely delicious. But sometimes the extra foodie scents for me are better suited to the wash off products rather than perfume, and I think Vice is of those.

    1. I bet Vice would be great as a scrub! I agree, foodier scents are best suited for the wash off products :) Though I did read a perfume review before I tested Vice that absolutely praised it. Good thing people have different tastes, otherwise the world would be quite boring! :)

  3. Fresh turkish coffee is one of my favorite scents in real life.
I have actually just made one:) We call it greek coffee here but they are actually the same.

I haven't tried Vice bacause I am not that into coffee in perfumes even thought I enjoy foodie scents now and then. Lovely post Rachel!

    1. You've inspired me too google Turkish/Greek coffee and now I really want to try it! I just need to invest in a Briki, though I am sure I can buy one locally at a Greek market/restaurant I've been to a few times. Do you put sugar in yours? I'm going to be ready for my coffee soon!

One exception I'd be willing to make with coffee perfumes would be through Darling Clandestine. I think they make a perfume that has a coffee note, but also a wide range of other notes in the same scent.

Thank you for the compliment! You're the sweetest!

    2. I don't put sugar in mine. I put 2 teaspoons per cup. We usually serve it with a turkish delight on the side!
I don't know if you have Tahini there but you can put one teblespoon in your coffee as well. It gives a good flavor!

    1. It's one of my favourite HOGs too - I love the coffee taking the edge off the sweetness of the chocolate.

  5. It is so very pretty! I wish these types of scents were my cuppa tea, because I do think it's lovely, just not my thing. By the way, I love your drawings! You're so talented!!! <3
