Autumn Daze: The Horseman by Haus of Gloi

Hello lovely little raindrops! I hope you're all doing very well. I thought today would be a perfect day to begin my Fall-based series, since we are already two days into September!

Recently, Liber Vix wrote about some great things she picked up from Haus of Gloi's Indian Summer collection (you can view that post here!); and she gave us a sneak peak of one of Haus of Gloi's new Autumn scents- The Horseman! I was so excited about the scent description, and I just knew I had to own it.

The Horseman official scent description:
Autumnal forest and wood, distant fire, smooth saddle leather, brown musk and the lingering scent of a dark gentleman's cologne on a black woolen coat.

I jumped and purchased the full size perfume oil, which I'm glad I did! I also ordered the bubbling scrub in the same scent. I actually received the pumpkin butter in The Horseman instead, but I didn't even contact them about it because I have a plethora of soap and not much lotion. I have no doubt in my mind that Matt and Britton would make it right if I were to ask, though. I have always gotten excellent customer service from them.

Onto the pictures and my thoughts on this perfume! :)

The Horseman is very dark, musky, and smoky upon cold sniff; and I can even smell the autumn woods. I sniffed Samhain to see if they were alike in the bottle, but Samhain is completely different to me.
I know this is crazy, but The Horseman completely captured The Headless Horseman in a bottle. It is musky, woodsy, and autumnal, with a good amount of leather from the haunted rider's saddle. It's like walking through the woods on a foggy fall evening. You can't see what's through the mist, but you're pretty sure it's a good thing you can't. The light from your torch does nothing to your field of vision, but releases a sweet smokiness into the autumn air.
I am seriously in love with this perfume and couldn't be happier that I got it. I wore it yesterday, and it lasted about 5 hours on me.

If you'd like to see what I ordered last year for Haus of Gloi's autumn release (which includes my thoughts on Samhain, Ghost Puffs, and Spider Silk),  please go here! :)

Thank you guys so much for reading, and I hope you have a great day/night!

  2. Oh, this one does sound like something I would adore! Leather and smoke! Does it get better? But I'm not one to blind buy so I'll have to sample first!

    1. I have some money on my paypal account so I went ahead and ordered samples! Now I'm craving a custom scent too! Maybe I'll invest in one soon! Maybe honey, woodsmoke, leather and brown sugar... or fern, oakmoss, vetiver and rain... Mmmm!

    2. Great review darlin'! I have a craving to put Horseman on again now!
Oooh, those customs sound lovely Nadja! I'm thinking of doing one with Marshmallow, Sweet Cream, Brown Sugar, and Woodsmoke. I want to see if I can do a true toasted marshmallow and woodsmoke scent. I love SS's Smoky Mountain Mallow but it's not marshmallowy enough for me. Horseman is really nice too! I didn't buy a full size because I was really hoping Willamette Autumn would return, and when it didn't, I commented about it on the LUSH board, and another member offered to send me their full size perfume for free, because they didn't care for it. I couldn't believe it, I was so excited! I did get a small Horseman butter to go with the Willamette Autumn though. I should be getting my fall order (first one, anyway) today!

    3. Nadja- I think this one would be RIGHT up your ally! I'm glad you ordered samples- I can't wait to hear your thoughts! What samples did you get? Both of custom ideas sound really incredible! Let us know if you do get a custom someday. Ive been wanting to do a custom too, but I am so indecisive (oh and still looking for a job that isn't part time... that would help too, haha)

    4. LV- Thank you for the compliment, that means so much to me! Your idea for another custom sounds absolutely lovely. Smoky Mountain Mallow but sweeter and more balanced, that would be perfect for fall and winter :) You're so good at creating customs, I have no doubt that that concoction would be heavenly! Willamette Autumn is a LUSH scent? What does it smell like? That is so cool that someone offered to send you their full size for free- I love random acts of kindness. Plus you deserve nice things, you're so sweet! I can't wait to see what you got for fall! I spilled a tiny bit of my Horseman perfume yesterday (I've been wearing it every day) , and it was very sad. Perhaps the earth needed it more than me ;)

    5. My order was really impulsive so I actually can't remember... I'll go have a look. I apparently ordered samples of Depravity, Troika, Honey Tree and Absinthe in addition to my sample of Horseman! HoG as a whole is a bit too gourmand for me these days, but I managed to scrounge up a few scents of interest! I alredady have a few samples from HoG, through some care packages, and I really like Samhain but not quite enough to buy a full size. Plotters Breakfast is also kind of nice, but a bit too much meat in that smoke for me... ;) I really want a custom scent, like right now, but I'll wait for the samples first. I think I'll write down the interesting custom notes in my perfume notebook and do a little bit of mix and match to see if I can come up wit something even more awesome than those two!

    6. Ooops, I didn't explain that very well. Willamette Autumn was a reverie HoG scent last fall I think, and I only got to try it as a whipped soap. I've been missing it ever since and hoped they would bring it back this fall. They might still, but I haven't seen it listed anywhere. The description for it was : The last days before the rains arrive: dry leaves, distant wildfire smoke, crushed fir cone, supported by white patchouli and oakmoss. I mentioned it on the HoG thread on the Lush message boards and another member (total stranger!) wrote me and said they didn't care for it (they thought it smelled like green pepper, which I sort of get but I still LOVE it) and offered to just send it to me. I think it will blend with Horseman nicely! Sad face for the perfume spillage-those open bottles can be hazardous!

    7. Nadja- the only other scent I've tried from what you ordered is Honey Tree. I have it in a tiny pumpkin butter, and it's a good one! I like to use it before I paint my nails :) I tried a sample of plotters breakfast, and though it's nice, it's too doody for my tastes <3 I know that your custom scent will be perfect, whatever you decide! You have great tastes, my dear!

    8. LV- oh my, I didn't even see Willamette Autumn last year! But I wouldn't have because I went crazy in the general autumn catalogue, haha! It sounds quite lovely, and that really is awesome that a stranger offered to send it to you. I think you're right that those notes would pair nicely with Horseman :) I've been extra careful about not spilling it now ;) I'm already going through it fast enough!

  3. Autumn based reviews! I am super excited!!
Based on your review I think I should definitely try this scent. I was afraid the leather at first because sometimes that note tends to be overpowering on me but if I finally place an order with HoG I will buy a sample.
Again, I am so jealus of all the Halloween celebrations you have in the US, we don't have anything like that here:(
    Loved the pics too!

    1. Amanda- I am super excited too- I've been waiting all year for this!! <3
I think a sample would be a good idea if leather gets overpowering on you. Their full sizes are $15, which isn't too bad.. But I'd hate for you to spend your money on something that doesn't work for you. If you ever do order from HoG, I'd love to hear what you think! They have a lot of great perfumes and soaps and lotions! Their whipped soaps and bubbling scrubs are awesome! Sometimes the scent smells different in the bubbling scrubs and whipped soaps though because of the soap-making process- but I'm sure you know about that stuff a lot more than me!
I follow a lot of Halloween blogs on tumblr, and they are run from people all over the world... One of them is a girl from Spain, and she says they don't have Halloween celebrations, but she makes her own Halloween parties!
Thank you for the compliment on my pictures :) You are too kind!!

    2. Rachel please share which blogs you are following!
That's a great idea! I should make my own party, maybe this way I will start a tradition:)

    3. Amanda- I'd be happy to share! The one I mentioned earlier is called 365daysofhalloween. Some other Halloween blogs I follow on tumblr are cyanideandcoffee, pumpkinspiceandeverythingspooky, autumnhollows, black-oaks-and-bronze-fruit, and tenderlumplingseverywhere. Do you have a tumblr? Mine is fundamentally-loathesome-lullaby

You should definitely make your own party, there's lots of great ideas online- and I think you'd have a blast! And it would be such a fun tradition <3 Let me know if you do- I'd love to hear about it!!!

    4. Thank you Rachel so much:) I will let you know if I throw a party, I want it for years but I have only managed to bake a pumpkin pie!
